A marketplace that solved its own cold start.

Shopy 101 is a mobile-first marketplace for digital products, operated by a UK limited company. This page describes what has been built and how it works.

The idea

  1. Marketplaces die of cold start, not of bad software.A marketplace with no inventory gives buyers no reason to open it, and with no buyers it gives sellers no reason to list. Most die in that loop.
  2. We removed the cold start with licensed content.Shopy 101 launched with a catalogue assembled from public domain and openly licensed sources — books, audiobooks, university textbooks, museum art, 3D models, fonts. Real inventory from day one, at effectively zero content cost.
  3. The paid marketplace opens on top of an existing audience.Sellers arrive to a product that already has users and traffic, rather than to an empty storefront.

The catalogue today

Live counts, read from the production database when this page was generated.

56,463products live

22,397Books
14,750Photographs
10,488Audiobooks
2,052Fonts
1,872Films
1,572Music
1,337Artworks
1,237Textbooks
450Design assets
3053D models
3Templates

Every item is public domain or openly licensed, and the licence is checked per item — not per source. Non-commercial and no-derivatives licences are rejected automatically, because they would conflict with a marketplace that sells.

Revenue model

Marketplace fee

Sellers publish paid digital products. Payments run through Stripe Connect using destination charges: the platform fee is deducted at the moment of payment and the remainder settles directly into the seller's own Stripe account.

No inventory risk, no delivery cost

Products are digital files. There is no stock, no shipping and no returns logistics.

The free catalogue is the acquisition channel

It costs almost nothing to run and it is what brings people in.

What is actually built

Android application

Published on Google Play. Readers for text and PDF, audio and video players, font previews, offline library, reading progress, multi-language interface.

Web platform

Server-rendered catalogue and product pages for search visibility, in-browser reading, accounts shared with the app, and Stripe checkout.

Automated content pipeline

Scheduled importers pull from fourteen sources, verify licences per item, measure real file sizes and skip anything that cannot be delivered as a single usable file.

Seller moderation

Uploads are pre-screened by an AI review step before they can go live; the decision is written only by the server.

Compliance

UK company with published terms and privacy policy, consumer right-to-cancel handled explicitly at checkout, account deletion available outside the app, security headers and per-item licence records.

How it runs

Firebase and Google Cloud Run. Static pages and cached function responses are served from Google's edge network, so catalogue traffic mostly never reaches the database. Every background job is capped so that a traffic spike cannot produce an unbounded bill.
