This enhanced-color image from the Mastcam-Z instrument aboard NASA's Perseverance rover shows a sample tube inside the coring bit after the August 6, 2021, coring activity was completed. The bronze-colored outer-ring is the coring bit. The lighter-colored inner-ring is the open end of the sample tube. A portion of the tube's serial number – 233 – can be seen on the left side of tube's wall. A key objective for Perseverance's mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock — NASA JPL · 2021.
