This animation shows a computer simulation of NASA's Perseverance Mars rover taking its first selfie. The point of view of the rover's WATSON (Wide Angle Topographic Sensor for Operations and eNgineering) camera is included to show how each of the 62 images were taken, which were later sent to Earth and stitched together into the selfie. The selfie was taken on April 6, 2021. A key objective for Perseverance's mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (b — NASA JPL · 2021.
