熊谷の中学を卒業した林清三は、住んでいる行田から、４里離れた、弥勒の小学校の先生になった。一緒に卒業した友達のように、上の学校に行きたかったが、家庭の事情で、それも適わなかった。まずは、羽生の寺に部屋を借りて、1里半の道を通ったが、次第に宿直室に泊まるようになる。文学、音楽、植物と彼の関心は変わっていく。その内に、病魔に襲われる。そして、肺の病の為に、両親を残して亡くなる。
