About

Samuel Clarke’s translation of the Odyssey accompanied many editions of Homer in the 18th and early 19th century. A word-for-word translation, which keeps the exact order of the Greek original, it is essentially a crib to help in reading the original. Based as it is however on superior critical editions of Homer, it is superior in many ways to the early translations attributed to Andreas Divus and others [the famous Versio Latina ] while not having perhaps quite the quaint charm of that.
